Abstract
landscapes are my favorite subject. Sumi-e is my
art form. Sumi-e is the asian word for
“ink picture” or “ink painting”. Every sumi-e artist uses the
traditional materials called the “four treasures” to create their work,
they are sumi-e ink, the inkstone, bamboo brush and asian paper made
from natural plant materials. The goal of sumi-e is not to reproduce
the appearance of the subject but to capture its soul. To paint a
flower you don’t need to paint every petal and every stem but it is
essential to convey its ‘spirit’, it liveliness and fragrance. Sumi-e
may be regarded as one of the earliest forms of impressionistic art
that captures the unseen.
I
believe that sumie is about touching the world around you with
all your senses and in turn letting the world touch you – then learning
to express that touch through the language of brush and ink.
My subject is nature and all my paintings have a
level of abstraction to them. Each painting is a composite of my
impressions and emotions. I like to spend time in each location,
breathing in the sounds, feeling the sunlight sinking deep inside my
skin and the breeze cooling my face. I become the breeze and let it
transform me. And when I paint from this perspective it comes from my
soul. I have found freedom in the traditions of sumi-e and a voice for
the love I have for nature and all the forms it takes.
